Battery Recycling

Battery Recycling
As a responsible company involved in the Battery Industry we have for many years had to treat waste batteries as hazardous waste and have had to have it collected and disposed of by legitimate companies. Usually our waste batteries are a by product of our product refurbishment service, a service by which have been able to extend the working life of other products such as rechargeable shavers and toothbrushes. We are currently waiting for the final version of the Battery Directive before we decide which compliance scheme to join. In our investigations we have company accross the Batteryback scheme which seems to offer small businesses, schools and organizations a free battery collection service. Many Local Authorities now offer battery collection facilities also.

As a company we are very conscious of our enviromental responsibilities and have currently begun the process of working towards the ISO14001 Enviromental Standard to compliment the IS09001 Quality System.

We actively promote the use of Rechargeable Batteries, these are can very economic and can save lots of money in applications such as Digital Cameras.

We all need to do our bit in increasing the small percentage of batteries that are recycled each year. The Goverment would like to see this at 25% within a few years.

Batteries on Facebook

We have recently taken on a Graduate as part of the Shell Step Scheme, amongst the many innovations he is bringing to our Marketing Efforts he has established the Cell Pack Solutions company Facebook site as a means to further our exposure on the internet. We have already picked up a small but growing fan club. Watch out for further news and other exciting developments.

Sustainability Event at the Customs House

Dame Ellen Macarthur gave the keynote talk at the Customs House last night. Have to say it was one of the most inspirational talks I have ever sat through. If you ever get the chance to hear her talk about her round the world race exploits, the TRUST she founded and her views on Sustainability, do not miss it.
John Short of Harlow Print also gave a talk on the benefits of ISO14001, it has spurred me on to investigate this further and have now set my company the task of achieving this additional qualification.

Look out for more news on this shortly.

Ansmann Chargers

Was asked to recommend a charger today. This is a difficult question to answer but in may opinion if you are looking for high quality chargers then you cannot go wrong if you look at the Ansmann Range of Chargers. There is something there for all budgets.

My personal favourite is the Ansmann Energy 16.

Why We Should Recycle Nickel Based Batteries

Nickel is commonly used in batteries as this metal is fairly easy to recycle and because there are numerous sources from which nickel can be extracted. Nickel is not that toxic, but other metals it reacts with inside a battery cell can be, this makes some batteries based on nickel dangerous and really hazardous to the environment if they are not recycled.
Nickel is commonly found in Nickel Cadmium Batteries. Nickel is relatively simple to recycle, but Cadmium, a very toxic material, is not. There are only a small number of factories that have the facility to recycle Cadmium. Therefore it is important not to let traces of the toxic metal to leach into the environment in landfill.
There is also another type of nickel batteries. These are called Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, and they are made of metals that are not toxic to the environment. These batteries could be easily disposed in normal waste, as they do not form a real threat to the environment, but it is better to recycle them as well because all metals that compose them, including nickel, are recyclable and can be.
Please treat batteries with care, dispose of them with care, collect them and dispose of them at local civic disposal amenities or look for battery collection centres.

GP430SCHR Batteries

GP are no longer importing this battery into the UK, so we decided to take the plunge and buy up all their remaining stock. It seems we made a good move because within the space of a few days we have sold more than half of it. Some chap in GERMANY bought 480 of the GP430SCHR.

GP Batteries are one of the world’s biggest battery manufacturers and we are proud to be associated with them.

Ladybird Book on Batteries

Someone suggested that I could get this book on Ebay, and after making some searches and a couple of unsucessful Bids, I finally got a copy. It was better than I remembered, the images of little kids with pliers ripping open batteries, and sticking tongues across battery terminals. Those were the days before Health and Safety, fantastic. I will take a couple of snapshots and post them shortly – assuming it doesn’t infringe copyright.

Had a great call today from a nice chap – he phoned to give me some feedback on an aspect of our website, and as I like to do, I chatted to him about what he did. He has a really interesting business and all of you really interested in Cricket, should take a look at his website Cricket Stamps.

I have been really busy over the last couple of weeks and I forgot to mention we have now cracked the 5000 POSITIVE Feedbacks on our Ebay site – this is not our main website but it does give the oppprtunity to get independent feedback.

World Heritage Site 2010

The twin Anglo-Saxon monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow is centred on St Peter’s Church in Wearmouth Sunderland and St Pauls Church Jarrow. This will be the UK’s Nomination for World Heritage Site Status in January 2010. Please support the bid and check out the website
www.wearmouth-jarrow.org.uk. There are a number of ways you can support the bid one would be to fill in the questionaire, or simply write in a letter of support. If you come up to the North East then come and visit Bede’s World or the Glassworks, these are both gateways to the Bid.

Ladybird Book on Batteries and Magnets

Caught the end of a TV programme last night – James May was presenting it. It was about his memories of Childrens toys and books. There was a great feature about Ladybird books and how they were so successful at the time. One of their features was their consistency, the quality of its information and the quality of its illustrations. They mentioned one that was called batteries, magnets and bulbs, and I have to say that I remember that one. I remember how it discussed how you could cut open a battery to see how it was made up. It was great because it was obviously printed in an age of innocence , an age before HEALTH and SAFETY. I would love to find a copy and if anyone out there can point me in the right direction please do.
